One of the reasons I realised that this 100 day blogging challenge has been, well, challenging, is that I can sit down to write with the best intentions, however if I don’t have an idea of what to write, nothing will come.

This is just how my brain works.

I can’t force the ideas, though I do have a lot of them, and they seem to come at the most inopportune times.

Many posts may seem like they are responsive, and they are.

A post on social media, or a random thought, or a task that I do every day may be what sparks an idea for a blog post. It’s the same with writing my stories. I need to respond to something.

I read somewhere this is common, especially among those with ADHD, also autistic people. This is why we struggle with ‘free writing’ at school where we aren’t given a topic. However, once a writing prompt is given, we can be incredibly creative.

This is also where I hate writing competitions that don’t have a topic. I have no idea what to submit as it doesn’t give me any indication of what the judges are looking for. If I have a topic, it can give me some inspiration.

If you are Autistic and/or ADHD, and struggle when given a blank page and instructions to just write anything, you’re not alone.

During the week, I started looking at all the stories I’ve written recently.

Here are the stats:

  • 90 short stories
  • 47 book beginnings
  • 42 snippets that I haven’t decided if they are short stories or something longer
  • 8 poems
  • and more…

The numbers above are only stories I’ve written during writers groups since they went online during 2020.

I am working out what to do with this information and how these stories can start earning their keep…

Not only that, I am realising that these stories are part of me, they are my essence. I am more real when I’m writing fiction than often through non-fiction.

On the blog, I share thoughts about life. In fiction, I share feelings.

Some of my stories are fun and silly, however they still have feelings in them if you dig a little deeper. Many are stories about finding your place in the world, even if it’s an alien or a robot, or whatever it is in the story.

There are a few different ideas floating around about what can be done with these stories, so watch this space.
