I drink a lot of tea. It’s chai tea and I have my preferred tea bags.

One thing I’ve realised lately is that I use making tea to help me with transitions from one task, project, or client to the next.

I work from home with a mixture of tasks and types of work. This includes as an employee and a contractor as well as doing things to start my business with writing and reading activities. The work is varied in type and engagement. No two days look the same, which is great for the ADHD part of my brain!

There is a lot of information out there about how transitions can be hard for us neurodivergent folk and switching between tasks at work can be a challenge. It is something I struggle with, and when I was in an office, it would irritate no end when I would be working on a task and someone would interrupt me for a new task.

I have found that I use tea to help me with transitions!

When I finish a task, I will get up from my desk and go and make tea before I move on to the next task.

This gets me away from my desk, while the kettle is boiling, I may do something like put the dishes away or put the washing machine on, then I’ll make the tea and drink it while I’m working on whatever the next task is.

This break away from the computer while I make tea seems to help my brain reset to be ready for the next task on my list.

I have noticed that on weekends, I don’t drink as much tea. This could be because I don’t need to focus quite so much, or I’m not doing as much so don’t need that transition time.

I have also found that if I don’t get that transition time, I am more likely to get overwhelmed and struggle with the task at hand.

How do you handle transitions as an AuDHDer? Do you have any strategies that could help others?
