Well, I don’t!

I understand the practicality of wearing shoes to protect your feet from various things, however I don’t understand the attraction people have to them.

I especially don’t understand why women’s shoes especially are so impractical and uncomfortable. Honestly, no one can convince me that stiletto heels are comfortable! They look incredibly uncomfortable and the few times I’ve worn them, I’ve been scared that I’ll fall over or the heel will snap. I also don’t think they look that great.

This is one of the many stereotypes I face in life.

I used to think I hated shoes and shoe shopping because I had wide feet and shoes always pinched my toes.

I now know more about sensory issues and having my feet in shoes all day is simply uncomfortable for me.

There are so many stereotypes and gender roles that simply don’t fit me.

I have shoes, however I tend to wear the same one or two pairs of shoes until they fall apart, then I have to go hunting for some new ones.

There are other shoes in my wardrobe that have been bought to fit various roles… one place I worked had a corporate ‘uniform’ that included court shoes as the most basic shoes that were acceptable to wear, and I still have a pair of those in case I have to wear that uniform again…

For the most part, I don’t wear shoes if I can help it. That is one thing I love about working from home… I don’t have to wear shoes. I am either barefoot or wear soft, fluffy socks when the weather is cold.

That’s not to say I don’t find some shoes cute and I like the look of them, I just don’t like wearing them and, honestly, can take them or leave them.

When my hair is long, I usually have it up in a pony tail or a plait. When it’s short, it has to be able to go behind my ears or up in hair clips.

If hair is touching my face, especially my cheeks, then I find it really distracting. It’s worse when my hair is clean and soft.

I only realised how much recently when I was reading about sensory issues with autism. I mentioned this last year in a group I’m in for women with ADHD, and found that I wasn’t alone. I hadn’t realised this was so common.

I have a steady supply of hair clips and hair elastics to keep my hair back from my face as I find head bands too tight on my head, even though they do keep my hair back off my face.

Some days, I think I should just shave it all off, but I don’t think it’d look very good… plus I don’t like the sound or the feel of the hair clippers!

It’s not just on my face either! When my hair is longer and I have it in a pony tail, there are some days when I can’t stand it on the back of my neck. On those days, I twist it around my pony tail into a bun.

Whenever I read about sensory issues, it often seems to relate to clothes, noise, or light. I haven’t seen much about hair or the feel of hair on skin.

I also struggle to find the sorts of hair clips I like, ones that stay in my hair and are easy to use. The ones I want just aren’t in fashion right now… I’m sure I’ll find some one day, I just have to keep my eyes open.

Until then, I’ll just keep going with the clips I have and do what I can to keep my hair off my face and neck.
