I am sick of being told ‘we all have the same 24 hours’. There may be 24 hours on the clock, but they are not the same.
There’s a post I see going around social media that talks about useable hours in the day, and this really hit home.
The number of useable hours I have every day can vary.
This can be impacted by my physical health, if I’m having a high pain day, then the hours reduce.
This can also be impacted by my energy levels. If I’m feeling overwhelmed and burned out, I don’t have as many hours when I can do things as I do when I’m not feeling that way.
This can also be impacted by the tasks. If it’s something that engages me, then I can do more, if it’s something that drains my energy, then I can do less.
The most frustrating thing is that I can never tell from one day to the next how many useable hours I will have.
Next time someone says ‘we all have the same 24 hours’, ask them what they mean by that. Also, most of the people I hear who talk about this are often men who have wives who do the housework and childcare (I know this is a stereotype), this sort of thing also impacts the amount of time we have to do anything.
Instead of beating yourself up that someone who has supports, is healthy, isn’t drained by masking or navigating a life that doesn’t suit them, is accomplishing so much more than you, celebrate the things that you have achieved, even if it’s just getting out of bed in the morning.
